Hugo de Rune is the younger brother of Amicia de Rune and the tragic, central figure of the early timeline. Born with the ancient, dormant curse known as the Prima Macula flowing through his veins, Hugo possesses an unstable and terrifying link to the catastrophic swarms of flesh-eating rats that plague the land.

From birth, Hugo's condition was kept a closely guarded secret by his parents. His mother, Béatrice, worked tirelessly alongside alchemists to find a cure, keeping Hugo completely isolated from the outside world and even from his own sister. This isolation shattered when the Grand Inquisitor, Vitalis Bénévent, ordered a raid on the estate to harvest Hugo's cursed blood for his own malicious ambitions.

As Hugo undergoes "The Great Break," his latent curse awakens. While the Macula grants him the god-like capability to command the rat swarms and view the world through their collective senses, every utilization of this dark power actively corrodes his mind and body.
