Arnaud and Sophia share a history that spans years prior to encountering the Macula. During a past military contract, Arnaud was ordered to execute Sophia. Choosing to defy his employers, he spared her life—creating a strict moral "favor" that Sophia deeply detested owing. She ultimately clears this heavy debt by agreeing to sail him, Amicia, and Hugo to the island of La Cuna without asking a single question.
